The famous shawl pashmina better known as cashmere is what many of us associate with Jammu and Kashmir. The pashmina actually came down to Srinagar, from the high-altitude plateaus of eastern Ladakh and western Tibet, through Leh. The skilled artisans in Srinagar transformed it into shawls known the world over for their softness and warmth. Ironically however, it was this lucrative trade that finally brought about the doom of the independent kingdom of Ladakh as it attracted the covetous attention of Gulab Singh, who ruled Jammu in the early 19th century. He sent his general Zorawar Singh to invade Ladakh in 1834 AD. Thereafter followed a decade of war and turmoil, which finally came to an end with the emergence of the British who was to establish themselves as the supreme ruler of India in the near future to come. With the emergence of the British, Ladakh and the neighboring province of Baltistan was incorporated into the newly created state of Jammu & Kashmir. Just about over a century later, this union was disturbed by the partition of India, as a result of which Baltistan became part of Pakistan, while Ladakh remained in India as part of the State of Jammu & Kashmir.
