The present name of Chennai has been derived from the name of Damarla Chennappa Nayak, whose son Venkatapathy Nayak was the erstwhile ruling chieftain of the region. The city was earlier known as Madras, which was derived from Madraspatnam, the site chosen by the British East India Company for a permanent settlement in 1639. The name Chennai is also attributed to another small town, Chennapatnam, that lay to the south of the city. In due course the two towns were merged, and the name Madras was favored made by the British to stay. However, even during the colonial rule the locals used to refer to it as Chennapatnam or Chennapuri. The city regained its name Chennai in August 1996 as the name Madras was perceived to be of Portuguese origin and done away with in an attempt to stick to the roots.
