About Chennai

For most of the year, Chennai experiences a hot and humid climate. The hottest part of the year is late May and early June. Maximum temperatures at this time of the year reach around 38-42 �C (100-107 �F). The coolest part of the year is January, with minimum temperatures around 19-20 �C (66-68 �F). The average annual rainfall is about 1,300 mm (51 inches). The city gets most of its seasonal rainfall from the north-east monsoon winds, from mid-September to mid-December.

Every December, Chennai holds a five week-long Music Season which has made it very famous. It has been described as one of the world's largest cultural events. Chennai is also known for the classical Indian dance form called Bharatanatyam which is also the official dance of Tamil Nadu in general. Chennai is the base for the large Tamil movie industry.

Chennai is popularly known as "Gateway to South India". This metropolitan city is well connected internationally to different countries and to other parts of India. Five major national highways connect it to other metropolitan cities like Kolkata , Bangalore, Trichy, Tiruvallur, and Pondicherry. The Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus serves as the terminus for all intercity buses traveling to and from Chennai and is the largest bus station in South Asia. The Chennai International Airport serves as the city's airport for both domestic and international flights and is the third busiest in India. The airport is also the second busiest cargo terminus in the country.
