Budget Hotels in Mahabalipuram

Budget Hotels in Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram was previously known as Mamallapuram, and is one of the most visited tourism destinations in Tamil Nadu, a state in India. The place is just 55 Kilometers off Chennai, which is the capital city of Tamil Nadu and forms a major tour destination around it. Indeed, Mahabalipuram along with Chennai and Kanchipuram forms the famous 'Golden Tourism Triangle' ashore Coromondel Coast.

Mahabalipuram is a 7th century port city of the Pallavas, a Dravidic dynasty who once ruled over the major portion of peninsular India. There are lots of theories behind the naming of the place, which is quite typical of Orientals. According to some people, the city has been named after the demon king Mahabali who was prominent for his kindness. Some maintain that it has been named after the Pallava king Mamalla. Mahabalipuram has a range of historic monuments constructed mostly between the 7th and the 9th century. The majority of these temples and monuments have been built by one or another Pallava kings. Kings of later dynasties also have done some add-ons and re-establishment works.

The most famed and glorious monument in this place is the Shore Temple. This temple looks completely gripping when lit by moonlight. Though the religious activities in this temple have been stopped way back in the late 19th century, the temple draws a lot of tourists everyday. The UNESCO has laurelled this historical city as a 'World Heritage Site' due to the architectural and heritage importance attached to it.

Most of the monuments in Mahabalipuram are rock-cut and monumental. These temples are very different from the later-Dravidian period temples that were built during the reign of the legendary Chola kings Raj Raja and Rajendra Chola. The temples of Mahabalipuram will accordingly offer a contrast amid the high raised 'Gopurams' that are so archetypal in the south Indian temples. The temples of Mahabalipuram represent the early phases of Dravidian architecture wherein Buddhist elements of design can be clearly seen.

Cave temples, monolithic rathas or chariots, sculptured relief and structural temples are something that is found in the remains of Mahabalipuram. The pillars are of the early Dravidian order where as the sculptures are mainly Pallava in their architecture. The grandiose Mahabalipuram arouses a certain kind of mystery, with its sculptural amusement portraying strong artistic disposition of the Pallava rulers who are considered by many as the originators and the dynamic force behind the Dravidian art movement.
